Michael Bellette
Michael Bellette
Managing Director/Captain/PADI Divemaster

Mick first had a scuba tank on his back at age 8 (thanks to his dad Ken!). His passion for the ocean has been strong ever since.

Being a Batemans Bay local, the Great Southern Reef has always been Mick’s playground. At every chance, enjoying boating, scuba diving and freediving. Being in and around the ocean has always played a significant part in clearing his mind – the ocean has always been his happy place.

Familiarising himself with the Batemans Marine Park over the years, has allowed him to explore what amazing dive sites we have locally. It would be selfish not share, and so, with his wife Tammy, the idea of Beneath the Bay was born!

Mick, Tammy and the crew, thoroughly enjoy sharing what lies Beneath the Bay and welcome all ocean lovers on board.

Tammy Bellette
Tammy Bellette
Managing Director

Tammy, Mick’s wife, has always lived in Batemans Bay and enjoyed the ocean life (thanks to the influence of Mick, when they met 20 years ago).

Tammy has only more recently become a scuba diver, “I’ve always loved boating and swimming at the beach with our family but thought if we were going to start a dive operation, I’d better know my product!” and so completed Beneath the Bay’s first PADI Open Water Course!

Tammy has said, “My love and respect for the underwater world has grown, I regret not learning to scuba dive sooner! Mick and I love watching our two children enjoy freediving and learning about our local marine life. If you’re on the fence and considering learning to scuba dive, I highly recommend it!”

Tammy and Mick are excited to share Batemans Bay dive sites with you!

Dan
Dan
Captain and Deckhand

Dan is a curious explorer of the outdoors, usually looking for interesting rocks, fossils, gold, historic things and cool spots along the rivers of mountains.

Dan is a calisthenics, gymnastics and fitness trainer, which consumes a lot of his time. Dan has also achieved a Guiness World Record for the ‘heaviest weighted ring muscle up’.

Dan is fascinated by the ocean skippering with Beneath the Bay has opened a world to him of meeting other divers and seeing the amazing places we visit during our dives.

Thomas
Thomas
PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer

Thomas is a Canberra-based dive instructor who regularly makes the trip to Batemans Bay to share his love of diving with students of all levels.

He’s been diving since 2016 and teaching since 2020. On the South Coast, you’ll usually find him zipped into a drysuit – yes, even in summer – ready to jump in and explore. Thomas enjoys making diving fun and approachable, helping students gain confidence and skills while having a great time underwater.

He especially loves seeing new divers progress through their training and is always keen to guide Open Water students toward Advanced and Rescue certifications.

When he’s not in the water, Thomas trades his fins for skis and heads to the mountains, chasing fresh snow with the same enthusiasm he brings to every dive.

Tony
Tony
PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor

Tony is a keen scuba diver who’s passion for the ocean and scuba diving was sparked after completing his PADI Open Water Diver Course in 1986.

In 1996 Tony became a PADI Divemaster and by this time had logged hundreds of dives along the East Coast from the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland to the kelp forests of Tasmania.

Fast forward 15 years and with a strong footing as a Divemaster Tony followed the advice of his diving colleagues and set about obtaining his PADI OWSI rating.

Underwater Photography has become a more recent diving interest and after a chance conversation with Mick, Tony found himself part of what has become Beneath the Bay.

Ken Bellette
Ken Bellette
PADI Divemaster/The “old bloke” of the organisation

Ken started diving with his grandfather and dad at age 10 (lobster and abalone gathering with goggles only no snorkel).

He purchased his own scuba set at age 16 (after starting work as an apprentice carpenter). Due to a lack of dive courses in the area he was self-taught in scuba diving out of a USD scuba divers manual – it worked!

Fast forward, Ken has been underwater for 50 plus years. During these years diving on war wrecks in the Solomon Islands, wrecks in Greece, reef diving in Vanuatu and extensively on the south coast of Australia.

Finally becoming a PADI Divemaster Ken gets great pleasure in giving new divers their first underwater experience and showcasing our local area of Batemans Bay for Beneath the Bay.

Norm
Norm
PADI Divemaster

Growing up in the region, Norm has been diving the South Coast of NSW since he was 12, obtaining his Open Water Certification. Norm became an Assistant Instructor by the age of 18 when he moved to the ACT to study, working in areas such as Paleoceanography and Geoscience.

Norm maintains his love of science and the ocean through the Reef Life Survey, and enjoys the majesty of diving with the grey nurse sharks; but finds the small creature such as the nudibranchs, the cryptic fishes and cephalopods endlessly fascinating.

As a diver Norm sees himself as an eco-tour guide who wants to show you the wonders of our local underwater world.

Ken H
Ken H
PADI Divemaster

Ken has been a PADI Divemaster since 2016 and absolutely loves sharing his passion for the underwater world with others. Whether it’s guiding new divers, talking all things dive-related and helping others experience the magic of the ocean is a true highlight for Ken.

Over the years, Ken has developed a strong love for wreck diving, and sidemount has become his preferred configuration – especially when it comes to technical and overheard environments.

Ken has been lucky enough to travel and dive some of the most iconic wrecks around the world, each one telling it’s own incredible story.

Emily
Emily
PADI Divemaster

Emily’s pink fins are more than just stylish – they’re a magnet for curious sea life. Eastern Blue Gropers and playful seals often trail behind her, drawn in by her bright gear and calm presence in the water.

She’s most at peace resting on the ocean floor in the shark gutter, quietly observing grey nurse sharks as they glide through their natural habitat. Wreck diving is another favorite, offering a mix of mystery, history, and marine life that keeps her coming back for more.

Emily has a deep love for animals and finds joy in the serenity and beauty of underwater gardens, where soft corals sway and fish dart through sunlit currents. For her, diving is more than a sport – it’s a way to connect with nature and recharge.

Sandra
Sandra
PADI Divemaster

Sandra has a deep passion for the ocean – from the awe-inspiring giants like whales and sharks to the tiny, vibrant nudibranchs that often go unnoticed. For her, every dive is a new adventure, full of surprises and wonder.

With over 30 years of diving experience, Sandra has explored iconic sites around the world, including the Blue Hole in Belize, the Red Sea, Thailand, Mexico, and the Caribbean. She couldn’t possibly choose a favorite dive – each one holds its own magic and memories.

Sandra hopes that every dive you join with her feels like “the best dive,” not because of any single moment, but because of the joy, discovery, and connection that make each experience unforgettable.
